 The RCDC at Haywood Community College is a Five Star Rated Child Care Center

bulletThe Department of Public Instruction has created a many-faceted option assessment assessment for teacher assistants to meet federal rules under No Child Left behind Legislation. See No Child Left Behind.
bulletThe North Carolina Community College System is in the process of entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of Public Instruction and the Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Child Development, for the early childhood credential process. bulletWith the opening of the Fall 2002 semester, Dr. Gerard Stamm has joined the full-time HCC education faculty. Dr. Stamm has taught at HCC as a part-time instructor in psychology and education and has served as an adjunct professor at Western Carolina University. He completed a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology at the University of Georgia. His doctoral research investigated the relationship between conservation abilities and adaptive behavior in average and slow learning children. He holds a masters' degree from Georgia State University and a bachelor's degree from Spring Hill College in Alabama. He is a member of the American Psychological Association and a past president of the Western North Carolina Psychological Association. He will be teaching psychology and education courses in HCC's growing teacher education and early childhood professional preparation programs.
bulletThe HCC child development center was recently chosen to be one of Governor Easley's new "More at Four" pilot sites. Region A was once again chosen to be one of the areas to lead the state in new child care initiatives. The new "More at Four" program is designed to provide quality childcare for all unserved four-five year children who will enter kindergarten in the fall of 2002. 
bulletNCCCS Board endorses program to help solve critical teacher shortage. See news release.
bullet NCCCS Board approves AAS in Early Childhood Associate (Teacher Associate) degree program for Haywood Community College. The College plans to offer this degree program in both on-line and traditional settings. See Teacher Associate for program details.
bulletAs of fall, 2002, HCC will offer its Early Childhood Associate degree program on-line. See Early Childhood Education for more information.
bulletThe faculty of the College of Education and Allied Professions at Western Carolina University approved EDU 116 Introduction to Education completed at HCC as a substitute for EDCI 231. This will allow HCC graduates to more easily access WCU teacher education programs. Faculty from WCU will be assisting HCC faculty to complete teacher education interviews for students who eventually plan to enroll in teacher education at Western Carolina University.
bulletThe HCC Childcare Center located on the HCC campus received a 5-Star Rated License from the North Carolina Division of Child Development. Sharon Davis, Instructor in Education/Early Childhood Education and Director of the Child development Center, says that there are several reasons why. See full text of article.
