The establishment of the Regional Child Development Center (RCDC) on the campus of HCC addresses three major interdependent needs in western North Carolina. These are:

bulletthe need for additional high quality slots for childcare that provide extended hours of care, especially for infants and toddlers;
bulletthe need for adequate training and technical assistance outreach to faith-based, public, and private child development centers and family childcare homes; and
bulletthe need for enhanced professional development opportunities for the childcare workforce.

As the Regional Child Development Center develops and expands into its new facility and becomes a focal point of the Early Childhood Education Program at HCC, it will offer four direct services:

bulletA state-of-the-art regional model child development facility to provide early childhood development services to 163 children and their families.
bulletA model laboratory site for students pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education both on-site and on-line, with internships in other childcare centers in the region.
bulletOutreach and on-site technical assistance to other childcare providers in western North Carolina, including Haywood and surrounding counties.
bulletOutreach, early childhood development education, and linkage to technology for families in Haywood County and surrounding western North Carolina counties.

To this end, a principal goal of the Regional Child Development Center is to function as a Duke Endowment supported model demonstration center for western North Carolina. Technical assistance to the RCDC is from Dr. Deborah Cryer of the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
